International Manufacturing Forum Series 2021 – 2nd September 2021 – Manufacturing and Digital Twins

The International Manufacturing Forum Series is a major initiative from the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic of Leiria in Portugal. This is a twelve day virtual conference spread over 12 months, with a one conference held on the first Thursday of each month. Each one day conference will focus on a specific topic within the broad umbrella of Manufacturing. There will be a particular emphasis on topics related to Industry 4.0 and Digital Manufacturing. CDRSP is a centre of excellence in the field of Direct Digital Manufacturing and was recently judged by an International Panel of the Foundation for Science and Technology to be the best Research Unit in the field of Mechanical Engineering and System Engineering in Portugal.
The IMFS 2021 September session on Digital Twins will promote discussion on Digital Twins and the advantages of their growing use in industry and in health applications. CDRSP has different research projects in this topic and we will share experience and research in its application on the optimization of direct digital manufacturing processes and tissue engineering applications. We invite papers which address any aspect of this emerging area. Examples of case studies will be particularly welcome. Please submit your abstract prepared using the template available here and submit using the form available here. Abstract will be considered immediately they arrive, so please send your abstract as soon as possible to secure a slot in the programme.

SEPTEMBER SPEAKERS

Wil Schilders

Eindhoven University of Technology | Netherlands

Wil Schilders is a Full Professor and Chair of Scientific Computing in the Industry in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on numerical linear algebra, indefinite systems, model order reduction, scientific computing, discretisation techniques, boundary element method, singularly perturbed problems, exponential fitting, uniform methods, solution of nonlinear systems, nonlinear variable transformations and numerical methods for the simulation of semiconductor devices and electronic circuits.

Wil’s key areas of expertise include computer systems, architectures, networks, numerical analysis, model order reduction, scientific computing and computational science. He has worked in industry for over 30 years and his emphasis has always been on the development of novel mathematical methods for a large variety of industrial challenges. This is also reflected in his current work, with many national and international industrial contacts, and his presidency of ECMI (2010-2011) and EU-MATHS-IN (from 2016).

Dirk Hartmann

Senior Principal Scientist, Simulation and Digital Twin, SIEMENS

Dirk Hartmann is a distinguished applied mathematician, intrapreneur, and thought leader in the field of Simulation and Digital Twins. His research focuses on mathematical algorithms in the field of modelling, simulation, optimization, and machine learning solving industrial challenges. His research has led to novel Siemens products and services cross product lines. Among many distinctions, he has been awarded the prestigious Werner-von-Siemens Top Innovator by the Siemens CEO and CTO.

Ekaterina A. Kostina

Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Heidelberg University

Ekaterina Kostina is a Belarusian-German mathematician and university professor. She is a professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and in 2007 was the first female mathematics professor at the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

Kostina attended grammar school N 64 in Minsk from 1971 to 1981. She then studied at the Belarusian State University in Minsk, where she received a Master of Science degree in 1986 and a doctorate in mathematics in 1990 with the dissertation: Algorithms for solving nonsmooth minmax problems. From 1986 to 1992 she was junior research scientist and from 1993 to 1997 research scientist at the Institute of Mathematics of the BSSR Ac.Sci., Minsk. She worked as a research scientist until 2002 and as a research assistant at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing IWR at Heidelberg University. After a visiting professorship at the University of Siegen, she became Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2007 and headed the Chair of Numerical Optimization at the University of Marburg. In 2010 she became a member of Synmicro, the Center for Synthetic Microbiology at the Philipps University of Marburg, the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the Max Planck Society. In 2015 she accepted a professorship for numerical mathematics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. She is a founding member of the National Committee for Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization (KoMSO).
