International Manufacturing Forum Series 2021 – 2nd June 2021 – 5G in Manufacturing

The International Manufacturing Forum Series is a major initiative from the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic of Leiria in Portugal. This is a twelve day virtual conference spread over 12 months, with a one conference held on the first Thursday of each month. Each one day conference will focus on a specific topic within the broad umbrella of Manufacturing. There will be a particular emphasis on topics related to Industry 4.0 and Digital Manufacturing. CDRSP is a centre of excellence in the field of Direct Digital Manufacturing and was recently judged by an International Panel of the Foundation for Science and Technology to be the best Research Unit in the field of Mechanical Engineering and System Engineering in Portugal.
Although 5G has gone from hype to reality, it is still overshadowed by its forerunner 4G. The impact of 5G is expected to be much greater for business than consumers. 5G may have great impact in Manufacturing. While previous generations of networks were focused on consumer application, 5G is expected to provide major benefits to industry. Manufacturing is facing numerous challenges and only marginal gains can be obtained through cost-cutting measures. To optimise end-to-end value, a new connectivity foundation is needed to copy, monitor and control the physical world.
The concepts of Direct Digital Manufacturing which is a family of technologies which is able to produce products directly from a digital definition without the use of moulds or other complex tooling. These technologies directly enable the possibility of personalisation of the form and function of a product at the point of manufacturing. Of course it is easy to see the changes in the purchasing process and in the supply chains both for the consumer and industry. There are major revolutions to come in the monitoring of the manufacturing process using wireless sensors at all points so as to be able to develop a digital twin of the process and the products.
We invite papers which address any aspect of manufacturing process connected with 5G, IoT, remote automation, critical applications like seamless human-robot collaborations and real-time adaptive manufacturing for e.g. complex milling scenarios, particularly with respect to both the technology, simulations, digital twins, optimisation techniques, case studies and applications. Please submit your abstract prepared using the template available here and submit using the form available here. Abstracts will be considered immediately they arrive, so please send your abstract as soon as possible to secure a slot in the programme.
The Chairs of this June Session of the IMFS2021 are Rafael Caldeirinha and Artur Mateus and this session is technically co-sponsored by IEEE IPLeiria Student Branch and IEEE Portugal Joint Chapter on Antennas & Propagation (AP), Electron Devices (ED) and Microwave Theory & Techniques (MTT)
